What are typologies of language policies?
Language policies can be classified according to different dimensions:
- Explicit vs. implicit, depending on whether there is a written document specifying what the government will do with respect to any or all languages.
- Egalitarian vs. restrictive policies, depending on whether the government guarantees the rights of all linguistic communities, including those with the least number of members.
- Presence or absence of jurisdictional limitations: is the policy effective in the entire country, or are there exceptions when it comes to certain areas?
- Depending on the stance of the government with respect to the preferred language and other languages: assimilationist, non-intervention, differentiated legal status, and unilingualism/monolingualism.
