What are typologies of language policies?

Language policies can be classified according to different dimensions:

  1. Explicit vs. implicit, depending on whether there is a written document specifying what the government will do with respect to any or all languages.
  2. Egalitarian vs. restrictive policies, depending on whether the government guarantees the rights of all linguistic communities, including those with the least number of members.
  3. Presence or absence of jurisdictional limitations: is the policy effective in the entire country, or are there exceptions when it comes to certain areas?
  4. Depending on the stance of the government with respect to the preferred language and other languages: assimilationist, non-intervention, differentiated legal status, and unilingualism/monolingualism.
