What are some states where language was/is a political issue?

The following are some states where language is a political issue:

  • Canada, between English and French speakers. There are legal battles over certain laws designed to promote French.
  • Finland, between Swedish and Finnish speakers (see below).
  • France and minority languages in its territory. France has only one official language (French), and is regularly criticized by the European Union for its lack of recognition for minority regional languages.
  • A political effort in what was known as East Pakistan to recognize Bengali as an official language resulted into the creation of a separate state of Bangladesh (see below).
